There are times when people with information on a crime are reluctant to get involved with the police, often due to fear or apathy. The South Bend Area Crime Stoppers program began in 1983 to address this issue. Crime Stoppers is operated by a Police Coordinator and a volunteer Board of Directors, and is funded entirely by tax deductibe donations. A key element to the success of Crime Stoppers is the media. The scope of the South Bend Area Crime Stoppers program was determined by the Michiana viewing area, which encompasses 13 counties in northern Indiana and southern Michigan.
